Healthy Spins on Your Family’s Favourite Takeaway Dishes

When you don’t have the time to formally dine-out or prepare a meal for the family at home, takeaway is the common hero that comes to the rescue in these kinds of scenarios. In addition to saving lunch or dinner in a pinch, having someone else cook once in a while can give you more time to spend with your family. However, when it comes to making sure your kids have a balanced and nutritional meal, it’s important to consider the healthier options when ordering and making sure to please the picky eaters at the table at the same time. Thankfully there are plenty of ways to do both with the numerous menu choices available today.

Italian Food

At the end of a long day, it’s easy to give-in to the favourite comfort foods that your favourite Italian restaurants have to offer. On the other hand, you also need to make sure that your family is getting the necessary nutrients to stay healthy! Fortunately, eating healthy Italian is simpler than it sounds.

Passing on deep-fried appetisers and entrees is a good choice when it comes to reducing unhealthy fat intake at the beginning of the meal. If you’re going to have cheese, consider a thin wheat crust pizza and don’t be afraid to blot the excess grease off. Pizza is also a great way to introduce new vegetables to your children. Colourful peppers, aubergine, spinach, and other veggies are excellent and nutritious toppings on a pizza and can be just as fulfilling and satisfying as a meat lover’s pie, which is high in saturated fat.

Indian Food

Ordering from an Indian restaurant may always seem like a healthier option for families because of the lean cuts of meat involved in preparation. At the same time, many Indian dishes are surprisingly high in oil, butter, cheese, and cream. Consider avoiding dishes that include Paneer (cheese) and anything that is fried like Samosas. A healthier alternative for a family appetiser may be a light lentil soup. If you’re unsure how any of the menu items are cooked, be sure to ask whoever is taking your order.

As always, it’s always best to incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into your family’s diet and Indian food is one of the best ways to do so. Kadai chicken and Salmon Tikka are great dishes to order if you’re encouraging your young ones to try Indian food for the first time. Hungry House, for example, offers a wide range of menus from Indian takeaway restaurants. From your favorite curry house in London to the Curry Mile in Manchester, eating healthy Indian food is now just as easy as ordering pizza nowadays.

American Food

The U.S. is famously known for having some of the most succulent BBQ ribs and mile-high burgers, but they are certainly not the healthiest dishes on the menu. While eating traditional American food may come with a stigma, you may be surprised that some of the most popular American takeaway franchises are also making grabbed food healthy food. McDonalds, for example, offers plenty of protein packed breakfasts to get you started on the day without making you feel sluggish. Substitute fries with items like fruit and instead of ordering a Pepsi or Coke that contain empty calories, consider enjoying a refreshing iced tea or 1% milk.

Enjoy the Choices

One of the best things about ordering food today is the pleasure of having so many choices! From delicious and fresh pizza pies to colourful indian dishes, everyone in the family will find something they’ll love to eat over and over again. However, with those choices also comes the responsibility of keeping your family healthy and happy!
